About

The Great Start to Quality Child Care Status Survey is asking all licensed programs to share whether their program is open, planning to re-open, or currently closed. The current response rate is 85%. Of the programs that have responded, 96% are open and 4% are still closed statewide.

Trends:

Survey Trends Graphic

  • Survey results indicate just under 6,700 child care providers throughout Michigan remain open or have re-opened, and they have the licensed capacity to serve more than 290,000 children, though social distancing precautions may mean fewer slots are available. Of those that have responded, about 250 licensed child care providers report that they remain closed or temporarily closed.
  • Parents and families can search www.greatstarttoquality.org 24/7 to find out which child care programs are open or closed in their community. Home-based providers are more likely to be currently open than centers - 98% of licensed homes providers are open versus 95% of centers.
  • Percent of open providers varies by county. Three-quarters of providers are open in SE Michigan (Wayne: 68%, Oakland: 90%, Macomb: 72%), while 100% are open in Northern and Upper Peninsula counties of Clare, Crawford, Emmet, Keweenaw, Missaukee, Ontonagon, Oscoda, Presque Isle, Roscommon, and Schoolcraft.
  • All counties are reporting survey responses. See detailed data below for all 83 counties in Michigan.
  • Almost half of open programs have a Great Start to Quality star rating.  See detailed data below for open programs by license type and star rating.

We have not yet heard from all programs, so local numbers may be different. Please help us increase participation in this survey by encouraging programs to visit their Great Start to Quality profile or by contacting a Great Start to Quality Resource Center at 1-877-614-7328.
